Basic Edge-to-Edge Continuous Line Quilting

This is a continuous curvilinear pattern that is stitched from edge to edge, regardless of the quilt design or borders. Stitches are generally 2-4” apart. This is definitely the most economical method of quilting. Patterns can be flowers & leaves, stars & loops, or a large meandering. You can choose from one of the pantographs that I have or choose a free-motion pattern.

Meandering

A continuous pattern that meanders over the entire quilt top without regard to pattern, piecing, or appliqué designs on the quilt top. The stitching will generally not cross over other stitching and will extend from edge to edge. A large meandering can be used as an edge-to-edge design or inside the borders if a separate border design is desired. Larger meandering stitches are approximately 2-4" apart.

Stippling

A small meandering is referred to as stippling. Stitches can be as close as 1/4-1/2" apart. Stippling is generally used in smaller areas or around a design or appliqué to make it "pop." The smaller the stippling, the higher the cost.

Custom Quilting

This consists of using several techniques on a quilt meant to enhance the piecing. Each block or area of the quilt will have quilting specific to that block. Cross-hatching, stitch-in-the-ditch, echo quilting, stippling, separate border design, Baptist Fan, and feathered wreaths are examples of custom quilting. Quilting is more dense, may vary from block to block, and may require starting and stopping of the stitch line to complete the pattern. Custom quilting takes longer to complete and will use more thread than an overall design.

Binding

Finished edging around perimeter of quilt to enclose all raw edges. My bindings are approximately 3/8" wide, pieced diagonally, double thickness, machine sewn to the quilt front with mitred corners, and hand stitched on the quilt back. Fabric must be supplied by customer; extra fabric will be returned with finished quilt.

Backing

Contrasting or coordinating fabric for the back of the quilt, sometimes called the lining. Backing must be 8” larger all around than the quilt top to allow for proper mounting on the frame. I can supply a wide-width backing in a solid color, a toile, or a muted print that "reads" solid.

Batting

Batting is generally cotton or polyester. Please send your desired batting with the quilt top and backing. It must be larger than the quilt top—8” is preferred as it will be drawn up as the quilt is stitched. For example, a quilt measuring 90” x100” will require batting measuring 98” x 108”.

Borders

Separate designs can be put on borders around the outside edge of the quilt. If you choose the basic quilting option, there will be a $25 charge for a separate border design. Custom quilting does not have an extra charge for borders.

Thread

I will choose the best thread option for your quilt top. However, if you have a preference of cotton or polyester, you must specify. Standard thread option is polyester, natural color thread. I can coordinate the thread color with your quilt top. I will use the same color thread in the top and in the bobbin.

Hanging Sleeve

A hanging sleeve is generally made from the same fabric as the backing but can be any fabric you wish.  It is stitched just below the top edge of the quilt with sufficient slack to insert a rod for hanging. If you require an opening which is smaller or larger than 4”, you must specify. Customer must supply fabric - 9" wide x width of the quilt top.
